When You Forget The High Notes

Updated: May 16, 2020

Last week as I sat on my couch in the midst of Christmas exhaustion surrounded by toys and

clutter, entertaining dishes yet to be put away and maybe even some stray wrapping paper in the corner.. I logged into Facebook and noticed there was a year in review slideshow. Usually I ignore these things, but I decided to watch it.

In that moment, I realized that in the month of December, as I reflected on this past year, I wasn’t focusing on the good things. In fact, I didn’t’ even think of the happy moments or accomplishments! They didn’t cross my brain in any shape or form. I hadn’t consciously pushed the happy memories and milestones away, but somehow they were buried deep under piles of self-critique and moments that didn’t go as planned. I was focused on what I didn’t accomplish or things I still had outstanding on my to do list.

Was 2019 a perfect year? No, what year is? But 2019 was way better than I gave it credit for. The past year brought some great professional growth, exciting accomplishments for my children, and some awesome new friendships. With that being said, one of my goals for 2020 is to take active steps in being more aware and grateful of ALL the good things on a regular basis.

I know being grateful isn’t a new topic in the realm of self-improvement and personal development. But, you may not even realize it’s missing from your life until you stop to ask yourself the question, “What great moments ( big or small) am I leaving 2019 with?” If all you can think up are self-critiques and doubt, then maybe you too should consider a reset in the way you approach your goals and mindset.

Consider for the month of January taking the time to reflect on your day and make note on all the things that went right big or small. If you’d like to take it a step further, put an alert in your phone to remind yourself to reflect or jot down a list each day. You could add this list to your current planner, or even use a separate notebook. It may help you to shift your way of thinking. After all, positive thoughts attract positive energy.

We have so many exciting articles and new website features coming your way this year.
